The world’s largest online retailer, Amazon, is celebrating its first- ever online store with a huge party.
The company is launching its new flagship store in the UK next week, with sales expected to reach more than $1bn.
It will offer a range of products, including e-cigarettes and nicotine patches, but its focus will be on selling its own products, with the aim of building on the successes of its e-commerce platform Amazon Prime.
The first Amazon Prime store is expected to open in the US, with plans to expand to other countries by the end of the year.
Amazon’s Prime Now service has already started to offer the US a selection of items for the price of a normal parcel.
It’s not yet clear how much the new store will cost, but it’s expected to be the largest online retail store in history.
Amazon Prime is already available in more than 120 countries, and it’s been a big hit with customers, with Prime Now sales rising more than 70 per cent in the past year.
Its Prime membership service, however, is being shut down across the US.US President Donald Trump recently announced plans to stop subsidising the subscription price of the Prime service, and Amazon is seeking a way to make up for lost profits.
Amazon is looking to expand its online retail business, which has been hit by a lack of competition from brick-and-mortar retailers and a growing number of internet giants.
Amazon has also said it will invest $1.2bn (£1.1bn) to build a new headquarters in Seattle, and to expand the Seattle-based operation into the rest of the US by 2020.
It said it would create 3,000 new jobs.
